ETHICS ROUNDTABLE FOR PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Chaired by: Dr. Annie V.F. Storr, Professor, Smithsonian Masters Program in Decorative Arts, Silver Springs, MD Mr. Carlo Lamagna, Chair, Department of Art and Art Professions, New York University Steinhardt School of Education, New York, NY
Panelists: Dr. Carol B. Stapp,, Director, Museum Education Program, GWU, Washington, DC Mr. Bruce C. Craig, Director for Research and Planning, Center for Education and Museum Studies, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC During this session, participants are asked to discuss core issues of professional ethics for those engaged in training future and current museum colleagues in all fields (including management, curation, education, development, and others). Panelists will identify standards shared with museum professionals before concentrating on the principles and circumstances that present trainers and educators with special questions of ethics and conduct. Roundtables will address questions such as: what core obligations we have toward our students; what we owe our universities, professional organizations, or sponsoring institutions; what service we owe the public (audiences, taxpayers); what other constituencies must we consider in our professional work; and what we owe to universal knowledge and professional circles through research and publication. Sponsored by the AAM Committee on Museum Professional Training
MUSEUMS: IT ONLY HURTS WHEN WE LAUGH Chaired by: Mr. D. Neil Bremer, Executive Director, Elmhurst Art Museum, Oak Park, IL What is the best joke you have ever heard about museums or museum people? Is there a relationship between the sometimes overly earnest style of professional community and the malaise and burn-out from which it frequently suffers? This poster session will pose a number of classic "museum moments," situations of stress or professional challenge, and then invite attendees to approach atypical solutions through interactive play, cartooning, and conversation with the session leader. Sponsored by the AAM Committee on Museum Professional Training
COMMITTEE ON MUSEUM PROFESSIONAL TRAINING MARKETPLACE Chaired by: Ms. Kristin M. Szylvian, Assistant Professor, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI The Committee on Museum Professional Training (COMPT) Marketplace offers a forum for the discussion of ideas and information relating to a broad cross-section of museum training needs, from entry level to senior management. The marketplace helps delegates identify sources of professional education and training and assess which programs will be most valuable to them at various stages in their careers. Throughout the session, representatives of individual training programs will be available to provide information and discuss career planning. Visually oriented presentations–such as posters, videos, and models prepared by past or present students, faculty, and staff of museum education and professional development programs–will highlight the diversity of approaches used and issues addressed in education and training programs as they respond to the ever-changing needs of the museum profession. Sponsored by the AAM Committee on Museum Professional Training
SHARED COMPETENCIES FOR MUSEUM PROFESSIONALS: WHO WANTS THEM, WHO NEEDS THEM, WHO CAN USE THEM?
Chaired by: Mr. Carlo Lamagna, Chair, Department of Art and Art Professions, New York University Steinhardt School of Education, New York, NY Panelists: Ms. Lois Irvine, Museum Consultant, Cultural Resources Consulting Services, De Winton, Alberta Mr. Bruce Craig, Director for Research and Planning, Center for Education and Museum Studies, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C
This interactive forum will introduce the concept of shared competencies, their potential value in ensuring successful and sustained museum careers, and methods of implementing them across the field. Changes in the larger world have had a profound effect on the community of museum professionals, what is expected of them, their qualifications, knowledge base, and competencies. Shared competencies are defined by the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) as skills that virtually all museum workers need to possess, at some level, to respond to the new economic, social, and technological challenges facing the community. The goal of the session is to discuss the rationale for developing shared competencies, review the process and results of extensive work done on competencies by CMA and ICOM, and present possible methods for implementing them in the U.S. Sponsored by the AAM Committee on Museum Professional Training.
