COMPT Sessions
E003 Teaching Ethics: Responding to what's new 5/23/2010 1:15 PM - 2:30 PM This session explores emerging areas that are mission-critical for many museums but have little framework for guiding ethical decision-making: environmental sustainability, the digital world, facilities renovations and expansionism, and community curation. Presenters will offer options to engage students and museum staff in defining ethical issues and responding to their challenges.
J016 Risk and Reality: Tools for Taking Risks Within Professional Realities 5/25/2010 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM Most of us acknowledge that risk-taking is essential to professional growth and institutional innovation. Session participants will have a chance to evaluate their own tolerance for risk-taking in a professional environment as well as tools for taking those risks and succeeding.
I008 Blurring the Border Between Learning and Doing: The Win-Win Value of Service Learning Programs in Museums 5/26/2010 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM Explore how service learning—a strategy integrating community service with instruction and reflection—blurs the boundary between "teaching about" and "teaching through" museum practice. A lively conversation will present key components of service learning and outline some of the challenges that arise from these projects.
